 About Us
AARP Tax Aide is the nation's largest, free, volunteer-run tax preparation and assistance service. We serve low- and middle-income taxpayers with special attention to those ages 60 and older. As our program continues to grow, we are continually recruiting dedicated individuals to join our team.

With the help of more than 32,000 volunteers, the AARP Tax-Aide program provides free tax preparation and assistance services to millions of low- and middle-income taxpayers, with special attention to those ages 60 and older. Electronic filing and online counseling are also offered by the program. The program's funding sources include the US Internal Revenue Service, AARP, and private contributions.

Volunteering with the AARP Tax-Aide program promises to be one of the most engaging and challenging activities you will ever undertake. In a recent survey, 96 percent of AARP Tax-Aide volunteers were satisfied with their experience. Many stay with the program year after year - many for more than 15 years.

The program offers a range of meaningful leadership and tax counseling opportunities such as:

  • Tax Counselor
Counselors assist individuals with the preparation of their tax returns in accordance with the guidelines established between the IRS and the AARP Foundation. Training is provided.
  • Local Coordinator
Local Coordinators (LC) implement the AARP Tax-Aide program plans in one or more assigned geographic localities. The LC recruits, appoints, ensures adequate training, supervises and evaluates Counselors (tax preparers).
  • Technology Coordinator
Technology Coordinators (TC) work with the District Coordinators and members of the state-wide management team to implement, maintain and evaluate automated systems for tax service, administrative procedures and volunteer training. The TC coordinates technology-related responsibilities, including evaluating and recommending needed computer software and hardware to provide electronic filing.
  • Communications Coordinator
Communications Coordinators (CC) work with the District and Local Coordinators to implement and maintain publicity and recruitment efforts throughout the local region.
  • District Coordinator
District Coordinators (DC) implement AARP Tax-Aide program plans in one assigned geographic district within a state. The DC recruits, appoints, trains, supervises and evaluates Local Coordinators, Instructors, Communications Coordinators and Technology Coordinators. The DCs monitors all activities in the district.

If you are specifically interested in a leadership (not a Tax Counselor) position, please fill out the Leadership Position Application instead of the Volunteer Application.

Volunteer Policy: AARP Foundation volunteers will receive equal opportunity and treatment throughout recruitment, appointment, training, and service. There will be no discrimination based on age, disabilities, gender, race, color, national or ethnic origin, religion, economic status, or sexual orientation.

AARP Tax-Aide is administered by the AARP Foundation
